so "what operation" is what flight number.

most likely, in different departments, like inflight ops(operations) they can refer to flights as "operations" its just the termnology that they use. probably seems confusing to non airline people. I know when I spoke to non airline people while flying, we had our own terminology, layover, turn around, trip, flight, deadhead, that kind of stuff. So, in the industry, and each company thre are different dept. like flight operations flight dispatch, SOC, inflight services, etc. a guy in ops could easily ask about a fight and refer to it as an "operation" rather than flight number.
